Year one reflections

Having just completed the first year of operation has provided the opportunity to reflect.

Firstly - my thanks to the many people who have supported me as I got the business underway. Your thoughts and pointers have been an immense help.

• Learning one - don't be afraid to ask for ideas or suggestions, many people are very happy to pass on their hard earned experience.

Getting underway has required talking about what I do, my approach and values. An interesting challenge which requires overcoming a natural reluctance many of us have for self-promotion. Testing the 'pitch' out with friends and business acquaintances has certainly helped.

• Learning two - marketing takes practice; build your confidence by talking with friends and acquaintances.

Working with clients has been assisted by staff in the agency helping with meeting room access, scheduling meetings, liaising with internal contacts. Their help has been very welcome and appreciated.

• Learning three - take the time to acknowledge and thank those people who make doing your work possible.
